who we are

The Vision and Dreams Project started off as an idea way back in the 1980s.

At the time Robert V. Dickerson, the founder, was just a 15-year-old sophomore at the historic Alexander Graham Bell Vocational High School in Columbia Heights, Washington, DC. The school offered Robert—and students like him—more than the opportunity to learn basic math and science.

By enrolling in The Linkage Project, young men and women were given the opportunity to learn new and sought-after trades within the construction field. Students were also granted the opportunity to assist in renovation projects for government buildings and most notably, the renovation project for the office of former Washington, DC Mayor, Marion Barry. Being innovative, Robert knew early on that this was something revolutionary.

The Vision and Dreams Project is a nonprofit renovation project that is located in the heart of our Nation’s Capitol. Young people as early as 12 years old—as well as young adults up to 23 years old—can learn the vast amount of trades within the construction sector through our systematic method of operations. If you are looking for a place young people can gain hands-on experience in trades such as carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC, then this organization is for you. Deeply rooted in the construction trade through the tools and assets he learned in school, Robert sees the Vision and Dreams Project as a means to provide a sustainable opportunity-laden career pathway, for both young men and young women alike.

The Vision and Dreams Project renovation project is also designed to train and mentor the growing number of young people who are either falling through the cracks at school or are already entangled within the juvenile and young adult court systems. Young people will engage in community-wide projects, while in school, that we assure will make a positive impact within their lives. Young adults will also engage in our revolutionary system of hands-on training methods as well. For those who seek to take the tools learned to the next level, The Vision and Dreams Project will help prepare them to one day become an entrepreneur. By partnering with this program, donors, sponsors and others will be a part of a revolutionary infrastructure that will allow young people to develop and improve existing dilapidated housings and other infrastructures within Washington, DC communities. With a passion to change lives one hammer and paint brush at a time, Robert has happily chosen the Nation’s Capital as his kick-off city in which to birth this vision.

“Our motivation is to love and help others.”
